The file name filter in the staging view does not support wildcards, but partial file names instead. E.g. looking for "*.properties" does not show any results, but ".properties" lists all the changed properties files.

Since this can easily go unnoticed by the user when searching with wildcards, the staging view should either support wildcards (preferred) or show an error marker somewhere when the filter contains a wildcard character.
